Which zone should beginners use?
The reef. Official media treats it as the starting hunt space. Unlock a second fish there first.
Routes
Three named waters. Move only when you are the hunter.
Updated

The official description names three places: the reef, the open ocean, and THE DEEP. That is the whole published map vocabulary. There is no official depth number, border, or spawn table. Zone routes on this page are conservative orders, not copied Feed and Grow charts.
| Zone | When to be here | Leave when |
|---|---|---|
| Reef | First Life through second fish and Level 19 | You stop dying to reef traffic |
| Open ocean | After a second fish and a trait | You are still the smaller silhouette |
| The Deep | After size comfort and a working Fish Tree habit | You die immediately |
Stay in the reef. Bite the tutorial starfish (Bd9IHpMI5Q8@00:00), open the Fish Tree (Bd9IHpMI5Q8@01:28), unlock the second fish, then take a Level 19 trait. The Deep is a dare, not a starter quest. Private servers do not publish a shortcut that skips this order.
After Evolution Begins, keep eating in whichever named water still has smaller prey. Official copy says there is no size limit, so every safe eat compounds. If a larger crown body enters the pile, leave. Deaths still pay +300 in early footage, but they also feed the current apex.
Late-game footage of a YOU ARE THE APEX Basking Shark run is a long, large body, not a zone skip (QItMWJ2aECY@00:40). Use open ocean to stack size, then treat The Deep as an optional last water. Official media still sells CAN YOU SURVIVE, not a guaranteed megalodon spawn.
The place updated without a changelog. Re-run five minutes in the reef before you assume prey tables are unchanged. Favorite the experience if you want a better chance of noticing the next creature drop.
Exact borders, lighting cues, unique animals per zone, and whether private servers change density. Leaderboard species in the apex clip were not readable enough at 360p to invent a per-zone roster.

A private-server table has not been published. Use the same reef-to-Deep order until an official exception appears.
